SIIM Recognizes Leaders in Medical Imaging Informatics

David E. Brown, CIIP becomes first CIIP Chair of SIIM; Charles E. Kahn, Jr., MD, MS inducted into the College of SIIM Fellows; Katherine P. Andriole, PhD, FSIIM, 2014 Dwyer Lecturer

(May 16, 2014) — The Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) welcomes a new chair, David E. Brown, CIIP, to the SIIM Board at the society's 2014 annual meeting. He will start his two year term on July 1, 2014. Brown is the Principal Solutions Consultant for Medical Imaging Informatics, for National IT Care Delivery at Kaiser Permanente in Los Angeles, CA. Brown’s past experience includes implementing PACS and managing imaging informatics at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Brown was a core member of the team who brought about the change from film-based to filmless operations.

He is the first Certified Imaging Informatics Professional (CIIP) to occupy the chair position at SIIM. In this role he hopes to leverage his CIIP status to reach out to other imaging informatics professionals and encourage their participation in SIIM. He says "These are changing times, and imaging informatics professionals need to be prepared. There is a need to prepare for the advent of enterprise imaging at a scale that we have not yet seen, but are beginning to fully appreciate."

Brown becomes the SIIM chair at a time when enterprise imaging is much more than a hot topic, it’s a reality. How does he see SIIM pursuing this reality? Brown says, "By providing educational content focused on enterprise imaging, fostering research in enterprise imaging informatics, encouraging networking and discussions amongst IIPs, and sparking innovation by challenging its community. This is what SCAR did when PACS was in its infancy, and this is the role that SIIM hopes to achieve with enterprise imaging."

New SIIM Fellow

Honors were awarded to Charles E. Kahn, Jr., MD, MS with his induction into the SIIM College of Fellows on Friday, May 16, 2014. He is Professor of Radiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin and an internationally influential and respected individual in the field of imaging informatics, particularly in the domains of online educational resources and other forms of decision support. Dr. Kahn's exceptional accomplishments and talents reflect the highest standards of SIIM.

Dwyer Lecturer

The 2014 Dwyer Lecture, "Transforming Healthcare and Biomedical Research with Informatics - Bit by Bit" was presented by Katherine P. Andriole, PhD, FSIIM at the Opening Session of SIIM 2014. Her presentation explored new ways of analyzing clinical and biomedical data in real-time and the transformation of Big Data to knowledge. Dr. Andriole excels in biomedical imaging informatics research, teaching and clinical service as Associate Professor and Director of Imaging Informatics at Brigham & Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School. She is completing her term this June as Chair of the SIIM Annual Meeting Program Committee. The Annual Dwyer Lecture features a SIIM Fellow as the presenter of a particularly relevant and insightful topic in honor of Samuel J. Dwyer, III, PhD - the humble, prolific pioneer of digital medical imaging.
