CIIP Recertification to Focus on Continuing Education

Direction set by board for ten-year time-limited certification requirements

(August 27, 2014) — The American Board of Imaging Informatics (ABII) board of trustees recently determined the direction for certification requirements once a certified individual reaches the 10-year recertification period. According to J. Anthony Seibert Ph.D., CIIP, FSIIM, board of trustees chair, "Recertification before the 10-year mark will not include a test. Rather, recertification will focus on continuing education tied to the most current test content outline."

"Rapid advancements in technology continue to change the knowledge and practice expectations for the imaging informatics professional," Seibert continued. "And with increasing demand for continuous quality improvement, linking continued certification to participation in relevant continuing education holds the most promise for assuring that certified individuals are keeping up."

While the general direction of continuing education is set for recertification requirements at the 10-year mark, the board continues to work through a number of details and policies along with an implementation plan. The first group of CIIP professionals to approach recertification will complete the recertification process in 2017.
